The Ultimate Guide to Mardi Himal Trek in the Annapurna Region in 2024

Mardi himal trek

Mardi Himal trek is a relatively new trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It was opened to trekkers only in 2012 and has since gained popularity among adventure seekers looking for a less crowded and more off-the-beaten-path experience. Located just east of the famous Annapurna Base Camp trek, Mardi Himal offers stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of Machhapuchhre (also known as Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, and Mardi Himal itself. The trail takes you through lush rhododendron forests, charming villages, and alpine landscapes with breathtaking mountain vistas at every turn. The trek usually starts from the scenic lakeside town of Pokhara and takes about 7-10 days, depending on the pace of trekking.

Mardi Himal trek is not considered a difficult trek, but it does require a moderate level of physical fitness as you will be walking for several hours every day at high altitudes. The highest point on the trek is Mardi Himal Base Camp at an altitude of 4,500 meters. However, most trekkers do not experience any major altitude-related problems as proper acclimatization is built into the itinerary. The best time to embark on this trek is during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons when the weather is pleasant and the views are clear.

The Mardi Himal Trek is a hidden gem that offers hikers the chance to explore a less-trodden path, where the tranquility of the mountains is matched only by the warm hospitality of the Nepalese people. This comprehensive guide will lead you from the heart of the trek through the subtropical forests, up alongside clear glacial rivers, and finally, to the serene alpine landscape at Mardi Himal High Camp.

Nestled in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, between the revered and bustling spots of Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, there lies a relatively lesser-known gem of the Nepalese Himalayas – the Mardi Himal Trek. This enchanting trail has been a long-forgotten secret that’s now beginning to surface among adventure seekers and nature lovers. Emerging as a quintessential blend of solitude and spectacular natural beauty, the Mardi Himal route paves the way for an immersive experience that’s often described as a “stairway to heaven”.

Planning Your Mardi Himal Adventure

Best Time to Visit and Weather Conditions

For trekkers looking to explore Mardi Himal trek, the spring months of March to May, and the autumn months of September to November are the ideal times to visit. During these seasons, the weather is generally dry and stable, and the views of the surrounding peaks are at their clearest, offering breathtaking panoramas. The daytime temperatures are often pleasant and trek-friendly, making it the perfect time for an exhilarating hike.

How to Get There

The starting point of the Mardi Himal trek is Kande, which is easily accessible from Pokhara. To reach Pokhara, you can either take a short domestic flight from Kathmandu or enjoy a picturesque drive, which takes around six to eight hours, depending on weather and road conditions. From Pokhara, it’s another short drive to Kande, where you begin your Mardi Himal trek.

Obtaining Permits and Trekking Essentials

For the Mardi Himal trek, you will need an Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These can be obtained at the respective counters in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Trekking in the Himalayas requires careful planning and packing. Ensure you have the right gear for the weather and altitude. From sturdy hiking boots to multi-layered clothing, it’s essential to be well-prepared for any situation. It’s advisable to carry a first aid kit, plenty of water, and some high-energy snacks for the Mardi Himal Trek.

The Mardi Himal Route

The Mardi Himal trek can typically be completed in 4-6 days, but the duration can be adjusted based on your fitness level, schedule, and desire to explore. The trek route is not as challenging as some of the more high-altitude treks in the region, but it does offer a moderate level of difficulty that’s manageable with proper preparation.

This section of the guide will take an in-depth look at the day-by-day trekking itinerary, covering the distances, elevations, and highlights of each leg of the journey.

Day 1: From Kande to Deurali

On the first day of the Mardi Himal trek, you start trekking from Kande. The trail slowly ascends through terraced fields and lush forests of rhododendron and oak. The charming village of Pothana is a good spot to take a break before continuing to Deurali, where you’ll be welcomed with stunning views of the Annapurna range.

Day 2: Deurali to Forest Camp (also called Kokar)

The path on day two offers serene climbs through the forest with moments of clearing that provide panoramic views of the valley below and the surrounding hills. The peaceful atmosphere and the sound of the wind rustling through the trees make this section of the trek particularly tranquil.

Day 3: Forest Camp to High Camp

The trail progresses further up and out of the forest to Low Camp. From there, you continue on the path lined with shrubby vegetation until you reach the High Camp. This is the jump-off point for an amazing sunrise view over the skyline of the Annapurna range.

Day 4: High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp, and Back to Low Camp

This day includes an early morning hike from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp. The climb is steep and challenging, but the up-close views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain), and the surrounding peaks make it all worth the effort. After soaking in the views, you will descend back to Low Camp for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Low Camp to Siding Village

The descent on the last leg of the trek takes you through the beautiful forested path and terraced fields where you’ll witness authentic village life. Siding Village marks the end of the trekking trail and the beginning of your return to Pokhara and end of the Mardi Himal trek.

Accommodation and Dining

Along the Mardi Himal trek, you will be staying in traditional teahouses. These are simple and modest, offering a cozy place to rest and enjoy a selection of local and international cuisines. Staying in teahouses provides a unique opportunity to interact with the local hosts and fellow trekkers, creating a sense of camaraderie and community.

Teahouses Along the Route

Teahouses are available in most parts of the Mardi Himal trek trail. They offer basic dormitory-style rooms, typically with communal dining areas where trekkers gather to eat and share stories. Expect cozy lodgings with shared facilities, but also be prepared for the charming Nepali hospitality that awaits you.

Local Fare and Dining Experiences

Nepalese cuisine is a highlight of the trek. You’ll be treated to hearty meals cooked with fresh, local ingredients. Dal bhat, a traditional Nepali dish consisting of lentil soup, rice, and a variety of side dishes, is a popular choice among trekkers. Make sure to try the local tea, known as chiya, or even a celebratory traditional drink, raksi, in moderation of course during the Mardi Himal trek.

Health and Safety

Being prepared for health and safety issues is crucial when trekking in the Himalayas and also for the Mardi Himal Trek.

Pre-Trek Fitness and Acclimatization

It’s beneficial to engage in regular exercise to build your stamina before the trek. Acclimatization stops in villages along the way will help your body adjust to the increasing altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. As you ascend higher, your body will need more oxygen to function properly. Slow and steady progress on the trek is recommended to give your body enough time to adjust.

Additionally, it’s important to pack appropriate gear for the trek, including sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing layers, and a good quality backpack. It’s also essential to bring enough water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the journey.

During the trek, you’ll have the opportunity to witness stunning mountain views and immerse yourself in nature. Take breaks as needed, listen to your body, and be sure to communicate any discomfort or concerns with your guide during the Mardi Himal trek.

As you reach higher altitudes, it’s crucial to pay attention to signs of altitude sickness such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness. If you experience these symptoms, it’s important to communicate with your guide and potentially take necessary precautions, such as descending to a lower altitude.

Overall, trekking in the mountains can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. It’s essential to come prepared physically and mentally, respect nature and local customs, and stay safe throughout the journey. So lace up your boots and get ready for an unforgettable adventure on the Hstnpl trek!

Health Hazards and Avoidance Techniques

Altitude sickness and dehydration are common concerns. To avoid these, ascend gradually, drink plenty of water, and listen to your body. Be aware of your physical limits and rest when necessary during your Mardi Himal trek.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency, contact the nearest teahouse or village for help. Teahouse owners and guides are typically well-versed in first-aid treatment and can assist in getting you to a medical facility if needed.

The Mardi Himal Experience

A trek to Mardi Himal is more than just a physical adventure. It’s an emotional and spiritual experience that leaves a lasting impact on those who venture forth. The tranquility of the trails, the grandeur of the mountains, and the camaraderie of fellow trekkers create a tapestry of memories that will remain etched in your mind forever.

Personal Accounts and Testimonials

Trekkers often recount their experiences with immense joy. Some share stories of the stunning cloud inversions seen from High Camp, while others recall the warm hospitality of the villagers in Siding. Each account provides a unique perspective and encourages others to explore the remarkable trail of Mardi Himal trek.

Bhupendra is more than just a guide or travel agent, he's a fantastic human, funny, kind and with loads of experience. I would recommend his company for anything from the simplest of teahouse treks to peak climbing. If you've got any questions about the local area or activities (ie. Rock climbing, ice climbing, etc.) go in for a chat. Very low pressure and will provide plenty of valuable information whether you book with him or not. Here are a couple photos of him on our most recent trek:

The owner of the office Bhupendra is very nice and honest person, he has incredible experience. He will advise and organize everything you need! We went on the ABC trek with guide Bam. We could not get any better! Bam, you are the best! He is a wonderful person, for 9 days we were trekking with much more than a guide. We hiked together, talked and laughed. He taught us Nepali words, some Nepali songs and taught us how to play Dumbal cards 🙂 thank you Bam! If we ever return to the Himalayas, it will be only with you! Kasia and Aga 😉

Professional, friendly and flexible. I checked out several agencies looking for a travel group to join, but this one was the only one that I felt comfortable with. And my intuition turned out to be right - the guides and the owner were really caring and my trek was a nice experience. On the ABC trek we had a lot of nice views, also from our room.
